I watched the first episode of Fallout on Amazon last night. Now I get to write a review! This will start with obligatory back story. Fallout the show is based on the incredibly popular video game. There have been 6 games in the series. So, the fan base is large and legit. As for me? I jumped into Fallout around Fallout 4. It’s a blast. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have spent more time with this series, but my schedule was a bit hectic due to my job as a television writer and producer as well as comedian. So, now you’re armed with info. Let’s talk about Fallout on Amazon and how it missed.
In a nutshell, Fallout fails because ultimately nothing matters. There is a very real lack of stakes in the show. In the game? You’re on your own. It’s do or die. The vault is a lie and you have lost everything. Everything. The Fallout Game is a fight for survival. Fallout on Amazon is a series of events that happen, and our characters get to pick and choose what they want to do. That’s not enough. For me anyway. The fan service and easter eggs are fun but again, it’s not enough. I don’t care about the characters.
As to the characters themselves? It’s all predictable weak sauce. Unless you count the cowboy villain guy. I know his backstory a bit. I’m legit rooting for him. Everyone can go fuck themselves. I don’t care about the lead and her missing dad. I don’t. (The whole Vault attack sequence was embarrassing. Was there 5 attackers or 50? Make up your mind.) I don’t care about crybaby army guy. He can go back to the barracks. Girl can go back to the Vault. Nothing would change. And that kids, is the problem. That is a recipe for not caring about a show. That’s how Fallout fell flat on Amazon. It’s the same reason Ahsoka failed on Disney Plus. Poor writing. The actors are all talented and good at their craft. But that and some fan service easter eggs does not a good show make.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ll give the second episode a chance but somehow the producers/writers (same as Westworld) really seemed to drop the ball on all the rich satire in the game.
Where are all the Vault Boy training vids etc.
We’re in the same boat. I might watch episode 2. So far, totally underwhelmed.
