Back in mid-80s California glam metal rockers burst on the scene with their “yellow and black attack” attire and a Bible verse from Isaiah blazoned below their logo. It was Stryper, one of the first Christian rock bands played on MTV, and the first to really make a dent in the Billboard charts in categories outside of Christian music.
Their biggest hit to date was the ballad “Honestly”:
They were riding high with gold and platinum albums in the 80s, went through hiatuses, personal tragedies, popularity dips and good old rock and roll controversies in the 90s, but they are still at it today. Their latest album When We Were Kings came out about a year ago, and they dropped a new single, “Still the Light” this summer.
Yet, it was their massive MTV era metal hits for which they will always be known. No matter what your beliefs, you can sit back and enjoy some Stryper on today’s Sunday Jams! Everyone is invited to the rock n’ roll table!
It’s good to know in these always changing times, you can still toss up your rock hands and bang your head as Stryper is out there rocking for The Lord..and audiences. God bless you Stryper, we love you. Keep on jamming!
Stryper aka The God Squad or the Blessed Black & Yellow Band of the Spandex Nation. Motley Crue & Iron Maiden were 666 and Stryper was 777.
OMG!!
I loved LOVED ๐๐๐ the 80s!! Big hair, Aqua Net, spandex, shoulder pads, vinyl albums, warped cassettes playing in Pioneer systems with the removable face plates, tour buses and groupies in every city and ….. $20 to see a concert live.
I lived in Northern California in the 80s and there was some rivalry between ALL the Rock/Metal bands of Northern California and Southern California. Stryper was So Cal so they got a lot of flak playing in Nor Cal, at first
When I saw Stryper, they opened for RATT and were so much better than Ratt. My 2 friends and I left after the 5th Ratt song to go to a rock club in Oakland. I remember the guitarist was a shredder and kicked ass. I caught a Bible with their logo on it at that show. Bibles and I heard at one time, gold coin condoms were thrown out to audience members at their concerts.
I wonder what it would cost to see them now??? Thank you for the heads up and fond memories of my youth!!
Very cool story! Thanks for being here!
