‘Black Widow’ Brings Back ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with Cover by Malia J.

Black Widow reportedly had a strong opening at the box office. And its popularity means a lot of people heard Malia J.’s cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which plays over the opening credits. And that means a lot of people are going to be talking about Nirvana’s original recording of the song back in the 1990s.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” has remained relatively popular since Nirvana released it in the early ‘90s. It’s never really left the public consciousness. But a lot of people are going to be focusing on it again with the debut of Black Widow. So get ready for a trip down nostalgia lane, which will undoubtedly be filled with a lot of flannel, hair hanging over people’s eyes, and slam dancing in mosh pits.

That was a pleasant surprise during Black Widow. These pixie-voiced, extra slow millennial covers are a guilty pleasure for me. To be honest, I want to hate them… I feel like they’re exploiting my childhood favorites and somehow corrupting them. At the end of the day though… they’re catchy ass songs and it’s nice to be surprised with an old favorite.

There’s a great band/group called Postmodern Jukebox that does these beautiful, jazzy covers of different songs from a range of genres. The very best, in my opinion, is their rendition of Black Hole Sun… you’ll get a kick outta this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6RD6mjiIZE
