I love Lou Malnati’s. I’ve been eating it for 45 years. Many a special occasion was celebrated over a Lou Malnati’s deep dish. And, it certainly is the most available deep dish in Chicagoland.

However, the very best, and my all time favorite, is the original Uno’s on Ohio and Wabash downtown Chicago. It was born in the ’40s when God touched restauranteur Ike Sewell on the forehead and whispered the magical recipe into his ear. The crust is light, flaky and crispy. The cheese is soft and stretchy. The tomato tastes like fresh tomato with the right amount of garlicy richness. And the sausage (pronounced sah-sage in Chicago)? Let’s just say pigs gladly lay down their lives at the chance of being picked for an Uno’s deep dish.

Everything else is an imitation of the original, including Lou Malnati’s. And stay away from the Uno’s franchise locations. Make the trek downtown and get the original.

Many moons ago had a great pie at Uno’s. Damn. Could go for one right now!
