How to Make an Old Fashioned (and Not Look Like a Total Douche)

Holy shit, you guys. I just wanted to post a video about how to make an Old Fashioned. Thought it would be a fun way to roll into the weekend. So, I jumped onto the internet of things and started watching videos. For fuck’s sake!! Can ANYONE make this drink without coming across like a total elitist douche? For real! The hipster energy is strong with anybody who posts a video on how to make an Old Fashioned. It’s unreal.

This should be easy. This should be fun. It’s not rocket science, ya assholes. But I remained steadfast in my desire to post a recipe. So, that is what we’ll do. Here’s where we’ll start: Pay no attention to the mannerisms of the host. Just keep your eyes on the ingredients, measurements and the pours.

An Old Fashioned is a fantastic cocktail and we should know how to make it. I’m going to post two videos. One using syrup (which is given a super fancy name, but it’s fucking sugar water; 2 parts sugar, I part water–ya heat it up till sugar dissolves for God’s sake; not a hard thing; don’t need to super fancy BS name) and another video (Super Douchey dude) using a sugar cube. Sugar cube may be the easiest.

You’ll need to suffer from some horrible dialogue and incredibly cringe-worthy bartender moves. Sorry. Couldn’t be helped. (Check out the way the bartender in NY holds and pours the bitters…what the fuck is that? Was he in an accident? Is that a trauma? Did he think it was cool?) Sweet lord…it was almost to much. But either way, we’re gonna learn how to make an Old Fashioned.

And here’s the sugar cube method from Mr. I hold the bottle weird.

Finally: The actual recipe.

  • 2 oz. (60 ml) Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon
  • 0.25 oz. (7.5 ml) rich Demerara syrup*
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 small piece of orange
  • Orange and cocktail cherry for garnish

* RICH DEMERARA SYRUP RECIPE: In a small sauce pan, combine 2 parts Demerara sugar and 1 part water. Stir over heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool.
