A Charming Space Adventure. The Guardians of the Galaxy Video Game Review.

In the same way video-game-to-movie adaptations tend to miss the mark, movie-to-video-game adaptations tend to fall short too. After hearing some good buzz around the Guardians of the Galaxy video game, however, I thought I’d give it a try (since it was included in my PlayStation Plus Extra subscription <— not trying to sell it, I just think it’s good for those games you’re kinda “ehh” about).

Now I should mention, I’m kind of Marveled out. Like enough already with the Marvel movies – it’s over. I’m superheroed out too. Its embarrassing to watch known, respected actors dressing up like they’re 7 years old and floundering their arms to display their “powers”. It’s even more embarrassing being the heavy set fella in the theater watching them. So I was weary going into it and I assumed I’d just tap out eventually due to superhero fatigue.

But then, almost immediately, this game did not disappoint! It was funny, fun to play, it featured some unique gameplay elements, some nostalgia, it had a good story, and it was well paced. You play as Peter Quill and you can command his teammates to do certain moves during the action. The voice acting was top notch and, while the character designs resembled the Disney Marvel characters, they had their own look and feel. These characters felt authentic and original and I loved them for it.

Overall, the game is a space adventure that reminded me of the Mass Effect series. You’re going to different space locations and fighting and exploring. There are some RPG elements in terms of dialogue options but it’s never too heavy and making a decision isn’t the biggest deal. Unlike Mass Effect, it’s overall quite simple and it’s a linear story which is quite rare these days in the never ending era of all-open-world-all-the-time. Ch

I played this on PS5 and it looked gorgeous, it was in 4K and very colorful, and it ran great. This game is also available on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Guardians of the Galaxy is just pure fun. The characters are constantly cracking jokes at one another’s expense, the gameplay is challenging but never impossible (for those of you with limited time), and the soundtrack is flarkin’ awesome!!! My favorite feature is that you’ll get a prompt, mid-battle, to give your teammates a pep talk and you have to choose the right words to get an added bonus for the fight; when your speech ends, you duke it out alongside a great 80’s soundtrack – it’s a good time.

I highly recommend you check out this game, especially if you’re a fan of these characters. If you’re not a fan but they don’t annoy you, you’ll like it too. I’m somewhere in the middle of those. They’re the least annoying overdone characters at this point, but they’re completely lovable in this game. The game itself is one of the more unique action gaming experiences I’ve had in a while and it’s worth buying at full price, in my opinion, if you’re not getting it off of one of these services.

Check it out and let me know if you played it and what you think!  Enjoy!
