John Wick Chapter 4 is officially in theatres March 24, and it is safe to say I have been a bit excited about this one.
I’m a John Wick sucker through and through. I’ve been signed up for phone announcements since January, downloaded all the character posters, and have a new black dress for ready for a special cosplay preview night this Thursday.
Keanu Reeves said in a recent interview with Total Film, this movie is expected to be an over-the-top action movie lovers dream and, in his own words, “banana cakes.”
I’m holding him to it, and plan on following up with a review here next week. In the meantime, here are four things I really hope to see in this latest chapter.
Clever Lethal Uses for Household Objects
Wick knows his way around firearms, knives and martial arts weapons, but some of the coolest moments are when he just uses what he can to take out a rival. So far, we’ve seen items like a pencil, book, horse, belt, motorcycle helmet, and wire utilized to lethal advantage. I cannot wait to see what he uses next. It is always wise to be versatile.
Donnie Yen Supremacy
Every new chapter, there is a new character you want to see tear through the scenery. This time, I want to see Donnie Yen. Yen is an Asian action film giant, and has his own kick-ass franchise, Ip Man. He is also the best thing to come out of the new Star Wars films with his role as Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Yen it truly One with the Force, and looks to bring on more great charismatic sword-wielding as Caine. Yen’s playing a villain, so… Hey, wait a minute….EVERYONE in the Wick universe is a villain. That means I expect to see a really good fight.
Gratuitous Expensive Suit Gun-Fu
I don’t have to explain this one to my fellow ladies, but for men I’ll expand. For women, a well-fitted suit on a sexy man is like hot bathing suit on a supermodel. When those men are going full beast mode with guns, swords, kickboxing moves and old-fashioned fisticuffs, it gets the job done. Reeves’s black on black suit, shirt is practically a character on its own. If the trailers are any indiction, it looks like they spared no expense on the tactical fashion. Don’t worry men, there will be at least one hot woman in tight leather and heels to keep you happy.
A Worthy Ending
I think Wick deserves his rest, whether it be in this world or the great beyond. With the untimely and heartbreaking passing of the classy and fantastic portrayer of Charon, Lance Reddick, it is time for the Wick Universe to wrap up in blaze of glory. Part of me would suck up any John Wick project that follows, but another part of me really wants them to quit while they are ahead. I want Wick to get his revenge, the a-holes of the high table to face what amounts to justice in their world, and a happy ending and hug for every surviving dog in the franchise.
This leads me to mention one thing I really don’t need to see: spinoffs and more sequels. I know there are already at least two John Wick inspired spinoffs in the works: the movie Ballerina and the miniseries The Continental. Fine, but please stop at that. Sometimes a universe and its characters are so intriguing it is tempting to want to keep it going. I think we know that doesn’t always work. I would rather see paperbacks and comics more than other shows if I want an expanded universe.
Please, powers that be, don’t Star Wars or Marvel my John Wick with too many quantity-over-quality projects. Let John Wick be completed and give us fans something finished and rock solid to have as our own.
