Maybe “get ready for the letdown” wasn’t the right phrase. Probably should have gone with “get ready for the reality of TV Production. Because here it comes. I shall explain. The trailers for Apple TV’s Monarch – Legacy of Monsters have been great. A real visual spectacle. Cinema levels of CGI. The monsters look fantastic! Now for the cold water: We highly doubt even Apple TV will want to pay for those giant monster sequences’ weeks in and week out. It’s just crazy expensive. So much goes into even the shortest of set pieces. Mostly money. Lots and lots of money.
So, what’s the solution? Pivot. Start setting the audience expectations towards a show about ‘family secrets’. Oof. That’s tough one. People tune in for Monster Island and end up with “Who did my dad really work for?” And ‘What are they doing at Monarch?” Not saying it can’t be done. Just saying its a tough sell. Finding the balance between spectacle and spy thriller/family drama is going to be a challenge. Let’s hope the writers were up to it. Fingers crossed.
