Korean rapper and singer Bobby, of the group iKON, loves bringing on some old school gamer graphics and lore with his music and videos. H is forthcoming album Sir. Robert, is playing with the Sci Fi space theme that should bring in new listers, as well.
Starting last week, Bobby was teasing his latest album with a series of three visual films channeling the old school Star Wars PC games, Tron styles, and more.
Being a fan science fiction and iKON I was pretty interested to see where this was going.
A few hours ago, he dropped his first music video for the album, “Moon”, and there’s no denying the connection to the look of late 90s video games like Tie Fighter or Dark Forces. The font is similar to Aurebesh (the Galactic writing of the Star Wars Universe), there’s a watercraft eerily similar to a land speeder.
The best part, is the graphics aren’t the pristine CGI of today. It is done with a love of the Old School.
The song itself is easygoing and catchy as well. There are also some beautiful Asian elements in the video like Cherry Blossom. It’s a great mix of nostalgia and new. Look for a sequence that pulls from A-ha’s “Take on Me” with manga style elements.
This isn’t Bobby’s first time delving in the gaming graphic in his videos. His 2023 music video for “hercules!” (featuring JUSTHIS) is a first person shooter in the style of Doom or Castle Wolfenstein. It also hearkens first person driver games, Mortal Combat, and some 8-bit fun. The song fits this style more, and is a pretty heavy industrial rap piece. Plus, there’s a ton of strobing in places, so if you’re into mellow this might not be for you.
Personally, I dig it.
If you’re missing the days of old school gaming 90s and early 2000s science fiction, I recommend giving Bobby a look. Even if you don’t get into his music, you’ll definitely want to dig out your old copies of Doom or Rogue Squadron after watching him.
Sir. Robert comes out Feb. 29.
