Anime Anticipation: the ‘Batman: Ninja’ Sequel and ‘LOTR’ Prequel

Last week, the first teaser trailer dropped for the the anime Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, and it looks incredible.

This sequel to the 2018 masterpiece Batman: Ninja, was announced last month with Batman and Robin facing off against this lethal, evil version of the Justice League. Superman seems to be missing from this cast, but I have a feeling we’ll find out why. If you haven’t had a chance to catch the original, where Bruce Wayne finds himself transported to Feudal Japan, I don’t know if you need to watch it to enjoy this new story.

However, I highly recommend watching it anyways:

This sequel is directed by Shinji Takagi, who was invited to direct by the original film’s director Junpek Mizusaki. That gives me high hopes for this story as well. So far, no official release date has been announced, but it should be available for digital download from Amazon and Apple when released.

Also announced this week, were updates for the film The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim, coming out for theatrical release on Dec. 13 from Warner Bros. The film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, best known for his work with Ghost in the Shell series and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. This prequel is set about 183 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings stories, and follows the story of Rohan King Helm Hammerhand, for whom Helm’s Deep is named. Miranda Otto will serve as narrator for the story as her character Eowin.

Here’s a good little breakdown that includes some recently dropped images:

At this point, I can never say if the films will live up to my expectations, but if the first Batman: Ninja film and the past work of Kenji Kaminaya are any indications, these characters should be in good hands.

No matter what you feel about the newer versions of favorite stories, anime just keeps seeming to do it right. Let’s hope these new stories continue that trend of excellence.
