We just got our first look at Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ trailer. Yup. The movie about a ragtag group of ‘bad guys’ who get recruited by a shady government agency to go on missions has a trailer. Take a look and let us know what you think. I definitely have some thoughts. Ready? The Thunderbolts trailer screams: Watch this on Disney Plus. What is the compelling reason to even make Thunderbolts? Why?
We’ve seen this movie twice now. First was the mega-disappointing ‘Suicide Squad’. Second was the way better ‘The Suicide Squad’ from James Gunn. The whole genre of government agencies recruiting bad guys to do bad things feels a bit overdone as of late.
But wait, say’s Disney Marvel, our movie has a strong female lead who doesn’t feel fulfilled. She has… an emptiness. Oh no. And who are you again? Is this the girl from that Black Widow movie no one watched? Huh… well, sorry you find life tedious. Not sure that’s a worthy reason for a movie. What is the compelling reason to watch this? The Seinfeld lady is the bad guy? Or is it the Stranger Things Sheriff? Bucky Barnes? I don’t get it.
It looks like things are business as usual for Disney Marvel. Just keep throwing out slight variations on things that worked before and hope the loss isn’t big enough to cripple the whole house of cards. Thunderbolts isn’t breaking any new ground. There will be a handful of laughs and an interesting action sequence or two. But this flick is looks destined for Disney Plus and a big loss at the box office. This is the death spiral that Disney Marvel is in. Unimaginative regurgitations that lose tons of money. Thunderbolts trailer looks like more of the same. That’s the giant problem for Marvel. Good luck. The movie hits theaters in May 2025. (We’re guessing Disney Plus in June?)
