So glad to share this retrospective of Godzilla. The ‘King of the Monsters’ has been around for 70 years. That’s better than just a good run, that is straight up amazing. Those are Dracula numbers. Godzilla has some legit staying power. What is it about Godzilla? Why is he so popular after so many years? And more over how does he survive all the bad movies? What do you think the ratio is between good Godzilla movie and bad ones? It feels like every fourth movie is winner. Then we have to suffer through 3 mediocre at best, efforts.
I have a working theory about Godzilla’s success in the movie biz. Right out the gate? The movies are relatively inexpensive. Second? There’s a universal (no pun intended) appeal to audiences of watching destruction. We as a species are fascinated with massive destruction. Always have been. Dudes will throw a big rock in a pond, and it will get millions of views on YouTube. It’s just one of those things. Lastly, Godzilla is a giant reptile. Almost zero emotion. You know when Godzilla is mad. That’s about it. And when he chooses not to destroy something…. you guess that he’s cool with it. But you’re never one hundred percent certain. As opposed to King Kong. That giant monkey is super expressive, and you know for a fact how he feels. Kong is like Rocky Balboa while Godzilla is a mystery. You don’t really know how he’s going to react. It’s that unpredictable nature that is key to Godzilla’s success. He can be both the monster and the hero. Just like us. Whaaaaaat? Yup. We are all Godzilla. Blammo!
