Here’s the newest sneak peek for Superman. It’s a fun trailer. I am legit stoked for this movie and have tons of faith in James Gunn. Overall, there’s a lot to be excited about here. I do have a couple of issues. both of which could be really concerning.
First up? They have to do something about Krypto. The CGI on Superman’s dog needs some help. It’s close… but it takes me out of the movie every time Krypto is on screen. Not good.
Second: The robots in the Fortress of Solitude. There’s a hunk of dialogue that is a real headscratcher. One robot tells Superman that they’re all robots with no emotion and there’s no need to say thanks. It would be a hollow gesture. Then? A robot is thrilled that Superman looked at her. What’s up with that? Did they throw logic out for a joke? If so, that’s a huge red flag for the rest of the script. Will it all make sense until they want it to be joke time? Not good.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Jokes ruin Superhero movies. They all start as dramas and the moments of comedy work. Because it’s a DRAMA! Then the studio loves the audience reaction to the jokes and wants more. That’s the recipe for disaster. After that, it’s death by a thousand jokes. The logic of the story gets bent to justify the comedy and the whole thing sucks. What do you think happened to Chris Reeves Superman? Jokes. Thor? Jokes. All of them were killed by jokes.
However, there’s always time to fix Krypto and the record new dialogue for the robot joke. Personally, I was thrilled to see the Robots in the Fortress! Good call. Superman hits theaters on July 11. Good luck to all. Please remember: It’s a drama that has moments that break tension. Drama. Looking at you, Warner Bros.
