Let’s start this student loan post with a video. A video of young lady having a bit of an emotional meltdown over the gigantic amount of money she still owes on her student loans. It’s worth noting she says she’s been making payments of 1500.00 dollars a month for 2 years. She now owes more than the original loan. So, yeah. She’s crashing out. Here’s the clip as it was posted and commented on by the Asmongold YouTube channel. He makes some good points. I would take things a step further and say it’s time to jump in on the whole student loan fiasco. More after the clip.
So, let’s start with big talking points: These people signed a contract, and they are responsible for the debt. Yes. I agree. And just because someone is sad in a video shouldn’t mean we need to make sweeping changes. I get it. Let’s talk about the bigger picture though.
There are about 43 million voting age people in American with student loan debt. That’s a shit ton of unhappy people. I’m not suggesting we forgive the loans either. Let’s just reduce the interest rate to a reasonable number. If someone got duped into a crazy 17% interest rate, wouldn’t it be a good idea to lower that number to something that the person could actually pay back?
Let’s hook these people who are struggling to do the right thing up with a more manageable 4.9%. (And while we’re at it? How about we re-evaluate the governments involvement in student loans. Seems like the more the government gets involved the more expensive things get.)
It would be a total hero move by whichever political party reduces the interest on student loans. Around 43 million people would be thankful. It’s compassion. It’s empathy. And it’s kicking predatory lenders right in the financial nards.
I’m not a fan of student loans and the idea that everyone has to go to college and the government will back up the loans. It’s always been a bad idea. Yet here we are. We can either stand back and watch tens of millions of lives being ruined, or we can step up and correct this BS. Someone is going to be a villain, and someone is going to be the hero. We should be the hero. It will pay off big time down the road.
Pretty smart for a homeless guy.
HA! I studied at homeless university in homeless Prague.
