Did Elon Musk just announce plans to build ‘Moonbase Alpha’? Let’s go!

This is some of the most exciting news in long time if you’re like me and just dig the idea of space exploration. I know there’s tons of us. Elon Musk just came out and said he has plans to build a base on the moon. Let’s go! Why wait for government when you can just do it! The guy has the rockets! It’s a legit idea. Why not?

Here’s a summary of the story on X. And it’s got me stoked! Elon Musk announced on X that SpaceX’s Starship will construct Moonbase Alpha, a reference to the 1970s sci-fi series, as part of NASA’s Artemis program to establish lunar outposts. Starship offers over 600 cubic meters of pressurized volume and up to 100 tons of cargo per mission, with in-space propellant transfer tests planned for 2026 to support landings near the Moon’s south pole starting in 2027. The announcement garnered widespread reactions on X, blending excitement for lunar ambitions with skepticism over timelines and the Moon’s role as a precursor to Mars colonization.

I’ll throw in some post and visual aids here in a second. But I’d like to add this first. I’ve said it before on The Loftus Party podcast: Elon Musk is developing everything you would need for bases on other planets. Need rockets? He makes those. Need power? He makes solar panels. Need robots for construction? He makes those. Want and underground base? He’s got a tunnel digging machine. Now it’s about putting all those things together. If Elon Musk want’s to start with a moon base? He’s in the best position to do it. Let’s go Moonbase Alpha!

And just a reminder of just how absolutely huge Starship is.

Someone at NASA has a beef with Elon and they should pipe down. Let Musk and SpaceX cook.

Who was it that said, “One does not simply sue their way to the moon”?
