Happy Godzilla Day everybody! I had no idea this was even a thing, but here we are. November 3rd is Godzilla Day. Good times! If a monster was ever going to get a day, it might as well be Godzilla. The franchise holds the Guiness World Record for the “longest continuously running film series”. And that, is a huge deal. So, let’s talk about the 2 Godzilla movies that keep hope alive for Star Wars fans.
The Godzilla movies have been through it all. From inspired to laughable. What started out very strong back in 1954, slowly turned into a cash grab, cringe fest. It was bad. Hollywood tried to bring Godzilla back in 1998. The movie had a great look and wonderful cast, but for fans like me, it wasn’t Godzilla. It felt like an alternate reality. It was like the Disney Star Wars movies. Yeah… it’s similar looking and all that but it sucks.
What happened next is what gives me hope. 2 movies. Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. You’ve probably heard of Godzilla Minus One, but maybe not Shin Godzilla. That’s a flick you need to see. The wonderful part of both of these movies? They were made by people who love Godzilla. It’s that simple. They love the source material. It isn’t silly. It’s not wacky. It’s being faithful to the ‘reality’ of the story.
THAT is where Disney Star Wars and Marvel fail and that’s the lesson they could learn from Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla. Stay true and honor the source material. Don’t subvert expectations. Make good movies. If Godzilla can do it, so can Disney Star Wars.
Shin Godzilla has arguably the best Atomic Breath sequence in the history of the franchise. That’s all I’ll say here.
