Here’s the trailer for Star Wars: Maul. The new show from Disney that really has me conflicted. Yes, we all agree that Disney has just totally fumbled the Star Wars franchise, but I am an optimist. The whole thing is just 2 moves away from greatness. That’s all you have to do. Put 2 wins up on the scoreboard and all is almost forgiven. Almost. And it looks like Disney Star Wars is going to fumble yet again with Maul. That bums me out.
Here’s the trailer for Star Wars: Maul. I’ll chime in below.
Just know this: Great villains don’t grow on trees. They are a rare and wonderful thing. IF you are the creator of an epic villain? You don’t waste that villain. People still buy Darth Vader merch by the truck load! Anyway, after watching the trailer for Maul, I think we’re back in fumble territory. The beginning of the trailer looks epic and it’s a harsh reminder that Maul should have been the main villain in a series of Han Solo movies. That’s the heartbreaker here too. The Han Solo debacle. Note to studios: NEVER kill your hero. EVER. Once you do? It’s over. I’m also looking at you, MGM and James Bond.
Maul is that very rare villain. Great backstory. Epic look. He’s such a strong villain he can back from getting cut in half in a light saber fight and it MADE SENSE! Do you know how valuable that is? Good lord! Don’t squander that.
Anyway, the trailer for Maul starts strong and then who do we meet? Spunky girl sidekick! I’m out. Aren’t we all done with this tired ass trope of modern story telling? How many shows are going to feature the feisty girl sidekick? I know you want girls to watch but think of something different for god’s sake. It’s so boring. It’s every show! The side kick girl who ends up being smarter and better than the lead. Stop. Think of something else.
Maul Shadow Lord comes to Disney Plus on April 6th.
