Hello there dear reader, let’s talk about the newest movie from Angel Studios, Animal Farm, the studio itself and what this all means. Allow me to first introduce myself, I’m Michael Loftus. I run this website and more to the point I’ve worked in Hollywood for years and yes, I also am a partner in StudioTST. More on that later. Let’s talk about Angel Studios and the Animal Farm movie.
Angel Studios screwed up. Bigly. They are known for their family friendly, faith-based entertainment. That’s a good thing! Angel Studios has a board and more importantly a ‘guild’ that decides what movies get the greenlight for production. If enough people on the board and the guild say yes? The project moves forward. This is where the Animal Farm problem is. The guild has about a million people.
Angel Studios primarily uses a crowd-sourced, audience-driven “Angel Guild” model to decide which movies (and series) to greenlight, produce, or distribute. This democratizes the process, contrasting with traditional Hollywood studios where executives make decisions. The Guild—over 1 million members—votes on projects, ensuring built-in audience demand before significant investment.
What should be a good thing for Angel Studios, has bitten them in the booty.
I’m guessing that huge amount of people saw “Animal Farm” as an idea for a movie and said yes. Having no clue that it was going to be a ‘re-Imagining’ of the classic Orwell book. The guild thought it was voting for a classic, and the filmmakers gave them something… else. This is where the board should have stepped in. They HAD to know this Animal Farm was not going to be faithful to the authors intention.
So, it’s kind of a design flaw built into the Angel Studio system. Take money from customers and let them vote on what they want. Sounds good until you get to a project like Animal Farm. Then to make matters worse, Angel Studios doubled down and started lashing out at the public.
Now I’m going to be blunt. Ready? Angel Studios fucked up. They spent a shit ton of money on this movie, and they are going to lose their shirts. Hopefully they can live to fight another day.
Angel Studios does good stuff. They finance a lot of good projects. They screwed up royally with Animal Farm and the board of Angel should be heald accountable. Tada!
The big take away is the culture. If you don’t like the current culture then you have to make content in order to change it. I think that’s what Angel originally intended. And I know for a fact that that is what we’re doing at StudioTST. We’re not sitting around complaing. We’re making content. It’s a different business model from Angel Studios but the intent is the same: Change the culture by making new things.
Angel messed up with Animal Farm. We wish them the best of luck. And thank you for being here and hopefully supporting StudioTST. It’s movies, sketch comedy, music and more. What started as a sketch comedy show has evolved into a movie studio and streaming service.
