Wednesday on X a guy made the perfect analogy. He was posting about the current state of the immigration problem and drawing comparisons to the events towards the end of The Lord of the Rings. The scouring of the shire. I’ll save you the long-winded explanation, but it boils down to Arthur MacWaters post. It’s spot on.
The shire was protected and safe throughout the whole of the story, then (Spoiler) it wasn’t. After all was seemingly said and done, bad things even came to the Shire. And even though the hobbits were peaceful, bad people came to do very bad things. Our heroes, however had learned that they could defend what they loved. I apologize for the pseudo spoiler. But what can you do? The analogy is perfect. And it resonates.
Europe is the Shire and it’s worth protecting. Hell, the west is the Shire!
No one is thrilled about the current situation, but the political class refuses to listen to the people.
The biggest of shout outs to the author of the post and the brilliant analogy and another massive thank you to Tolkien for writing a timeless myth that is built for endless analogies. It’s almost like he knew what he was doing when he wrote The Lord of the Rings. That last part was a little joke, lighten up.
