You will own nothing and like it. That would appear to be the phrase that Sony PlayStation lives by. The gaming console company announced the move to ‘Digital Only’ media today. Sony says that starting in 2028, they will end the release of physical media. No more discs.
IF Sony goes through with this? I’ll move to a different platform. Maybe PC. Why in the world would I rent games that I bought from Sony? That is what this all means. It’s ridiculous. They can take the content away from you whenever they want. It’s a horrible move.
Here’s a bit of the press release from Sony PlayStation:
“In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”
I find that to be laughable. “Shifting trends in consumer preference”. LOL! I know that I’m a consumer. I also know I want physical media. I want the thing that I bought and paid for. In my hand. IF I don’t have the media in my hand and it only exists on the PlayStation server, Sony can keep it from me or delete it whenever they want. That means I don’t own the media. They can hold the consumer hostage. Whenever they want, they can change the deal. That isn’t good for anyone, except Sony PlayStation. That’s a deal breaker for me.
We need to send a strong message that this is unacceptable. We don’t buy things just to ultimately rent them. This should be a deal breaker for everyone who cares about media and ownership. This Sony move sets a horrible precedent.

But they would NEVER have you buy something and just delete it. Or would they? They already do!
Now things get truly dystopian. IF it’s a digital only world, who’s to say they can’t change the content of the game or the movie? They could just release a game or movie and claim that’s the true version. Who could prove that there was ever a different one? And before you think that idea is far out? Amazon seems to be toying around with the idea.
They could also just block you from accessing your media for violating some new social rule? Maybe they don’t like what you said about the new dictator in Latvaria? You just lost your library of media. Sorry loser. You should have shut up about it.
So, here at The Loftus Party we plan on pushing back on the Sony PlayStation choice to go fully digital. If they insist on doing it? We’ll take our money and run. How about you? What’s your plan?
