Sunday Jams – Offspring

Let’s take a look at the deeper side of everyone’s favorite Southern California almost-punk band. Their high-energy, grungy skateboard-scene punk sound is as distinctive as lead vocalist’s Dexter Holland’s shout-singing.

All of which makes it an odd place for such intelligent and witty lyrics. Many of their songs are about the sad and seamy side of gangs, crime, drugs and violence. Somehow, though, they make the songs memorable and evocative. So let’s dive into two of their most poignant songs and the one that had me laughing so hard in my cubicle, my colleagues were worried.

Gone Away – The pain of losing a loved one
Days Go By – A look back at bad times with a hopeful eye to tomorrow

And well, if the above made you a little misty-eyed, let’s end with a trip to the suburbs where a wannabe Eminem is trying too hard.
