HBO has decided to ruin Scooby Doo.

This little article just intended as a public notice. Just wanted to be on the record for an “Told you so” moment. HBO has decided to ruin Scooby Doo. They just released the artwork for the main characters in their adult Scooby Doo cartoon, titled: Velma. Let’s discuss this briefly. The whole project really quite pathetic.

HBO has decided to drive the Scooby Doo franchise into the dirt. Here’s what they have decided to produce. A show with all the characters from Scooby Doo… without Scooby Doo, evidently. Okay… There’s still a gang of meddling kids trying to solve mysteries, but it’s not really the characters you know, love and care about. According to the IGN website, the origin story preview was “…full of a grizzly murder, profanity, and some butts.” Did they mean grisly murder? Or does a bear get killed? Doesn’t matter, really. The question we keep asking is: Who is this show for? Who is the target audience? The whole concept sounds like a first-year stand-up comics act. Or a middle school kids’ conversation on the bus ride home. Velma’s gay you guys! Shaggy and Scooby are hungry all the time because they’re high from Scooby Snacks! LOL! Fred is gay! Hehehehe! Daphne is hot. This was all fiercely original when we were 12. It’s all kind of hack now.

That won’t stop HBO. They got a woke Scooby show on the way! And I think we’re supposed to be shocked or surprised that Shaggy is black? Or Norville (Shaggy’s ‘real’ name) is black. And why is the stoner guy black? Hmmmm. Interesting choice. Why not Fred? Why isn’t Fred a person of color? Why is the scared, stoner guy black? Oh well, that doesn’t matter either. The Velma show is a waste of time, money and energy. It’s nothing more that reminder of the incredible lack of creativity in entertainment. You want to do an adult cartoon? Make one up! That’s what you’re supposed to be able to do! Co-opting an established franchise is lazy and boring. HBO must really need content to greenlight something like this that is so incredibly pedestrian and predictable. The series is a joke unto itself. I would rather watch a cartoon about the executives who gave this Velma shit the go ahead than the actual Velma show itself. That would be way more entertaining. Good luck, Velma. Cash the checks immediately.
