Cool ‘Toons to Check Out This Summer

If you’re a little worn out with the offerings of animated features from mainstream sources, might I present a couple of cool alternatives for your grownup summer animation fix you might not know about:

Out Now: Lackadaisy

Now available on YouTube is the half-hour short film based on Tracky Butler’s Eisner Award winning webtoon from 2006. Bootlegger cats in the roarin’ 20s complete with great car chases, a cool speakeasy, a collection of unique characters and lots of gangsta action.

The animated pilot was created with the help of a Kickstarter campaign, and was made available for viewing this March. It is really a high-speed, colorful ride, with nifty characters, great settings and a wonderful music score.

Coming Soon: Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

Based on the manga by Haro Aso (who gave us the stellar Alice in Borderland), Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a different take on the zombie series. What’s the best thing about a zombie apocalypse? You don’t have to go to work anymore in your crappy job, and you can start knocking off your bucket list. Of course, you’re dealing with zombies the whole time, and your list needs to include several ways to survive a zombie attack.

I love the manga, and it looks like anime will have the same wild energy. The anime hits both Netflix and Hulu on July 9 (subtitled) which will make it easy to find. I don’t know if there will be a dubbed version available, but there usually is.

There is also a live action adaptation on its way, and this one looks like it will stay true to the story and vibe like the Alice In Borderland series did.

Let’s hope it does, but I will definitely be catching both.

If you are still waiting for something fresh from the mainstream, enjoy some cool animation that takes you off the beaten path in the meantime, and into the worlds of gangsta cats and slacker zombies fighters.
