Just check out the trailer for Ridley Scott’ Napoleon. This movie looks huge! Like an old school Hollywood epic. The sets. the costumes, the oceans of extras. Napoleon looks amazing. Just like an epic period piece should. Now, how much of the movie is CGI and how much is practical? I don’t know. But my goodness this movie looks expensive as all get out. And that’s what I wanna see at the movie theater. A giant sweeping epic. Insane production value. It’s a movie about Napoleon! You gotta go big. Sony shelled out 100 million for this flick, but it looks like it’s all on the screen.
Now the question is this: Is Napoleon the last chance for the Hollywood epic? If Napoleon goes down in flames, (bonus points awarded for not doing a Waterloo joke here) will anyone ever try again? And if Napoleon wins at the box office, do we get more big movies? It’s an exciting notion. And there hasn’t been a lot to get excited about coming out of Hollywood for a long time. Napoleon hits theaters this thanksgiving.
