There’s only so many times you can hear “Thriller” or “Nightmare on My Street” in October, and although I love many of the popular Halloween season choices like “Werewolves of London”, sometimes you want to get a little classier and old school.
Here, in no particular order are five cool spooky season suitable songs straight from the swankier, cooler days that spanned of the late 20s to the early 60s.
Kay Starr, “Headless Horseman” (1949)
The foreboding tune sung by Bing Crosby in Disney’s version of Legend of Sleepy Hollow somehow seems so much wicked with Starr in the vocals.
Duke Ellington and his Orchestra “Haunted Nights” (1929)
Imagine heading down to the Cotton Club on a breezy fall evening and hearing this baby live? Only Ellington could be this timeless.
Martin Denny, “Swamp Fire” (1959)
This king of the exotica sounds leads us into the dark swamp lands for a groovy party.
Charles Sheffield, “Voodoo Working” (1961)
Sheffield was a Louisiana-born R&B singer, so it is no surprise one of his most popular tunes is voodoo themed.
Round Robin “I’m the Wolfman” (1965)
Ending the the “newest” hit on the list, Round Robin puts out a rockin’ party banger to keep the late night crowd going.
Whether it was classier costumes or better cocktails, the fall parties of the earlier Twentieth Century must have been lit…just like most of the tiki drinks.
Awesome lineup, you couldn’t have possibly come up with this track list on your own?
C’mon, you’re seeing a chickadee with musical taste perhaps? lol. Really liked that Swamp Fire….
Oh and hey, my twitter account has been doing crazy shit, deleting my follows, locking me out, not showing my posts… must be that voodoo curse? So be cool to this fool.
