Wonderful Christmas Season Reads

It is time to start thinking about Christmas gifts again, and my family’s ideas are often books.

I feel fortunate be part of a family of avid readers, but when I am looking for books for several different people of all ages and tastes, it can be a bit puzzling. This season, while shopping for your own family, there is another family of fantastic authors, Andrew Klavan and Faith Moore, offering two generations of stellar holiday-themed storytelling for under the tree.

When Christmas Comes by Andrew Klavan.

Although this isn’t Klavan’s latest thriller, it is still a perfect read during the holidays. When a decorated Army Ranger, Travis Blake, confesses to the murder of his girlfriend, a school librarian, the outcome doesn’t sit right with English professor Cameron Winter. In a seemingly peaceful and close-knit community like Sweet Haven, the idea of Blake committing this horrible crime seems more and more improbable to him. A former love of Blake’s feels the same way, and encourages Winter to look into it. Winter must begin dealing with his own past demons, as he tries to uncover the truth behind this murder.

Klavan not only has this knack for creating page-turning mysteries that come to both unexpected and satisfying conclusions, but in the case of stories like When Christmas Comes, he is able to add some holiday season sentimentality without being saccharine.

This is the first of Klavan’s three Cameron Winter Mysteries. The latest, The House of Love and Death, was just released this fall, so you could give all three — When Christmas Comes, A Strange Habit of Mind and The House of Love and Death — as a gift set. Bonus!

Christmas Karol by Faith Moore

Moore, who gave us the thoughtful nonfiction Saving Cinderella: What Feminists Get Wrong About Disney Princesses and How to Set It Right, has released her first work of fiction and it is delightful. Despite what the title indicates, this is not just another straightforward retelling of the Dickens perennial favorite, A Christmas Carol. It does follow same story of ghostly visits granting a redemptive fate for the main character, but Karol Charles is more than a gender-swapped version of Ebenezer Scrooge. Karol isn’t a bitter lonely miser, but the victim of her own misplaced good intentions. On the surface, this modern New York woman might seem to be doing just fine. However, her family life is the sacrifice she makes for her busy lifestyle. Instead of spending a night in a drafty lonely mansion, Moore’s character begins her journey towards reconnecting with what’s really important in life after landing in the hospital that evening. Moore has kept the elements of A Christmas Carol we all love, but added a sad and beautiful look why we need to keep our families in focus. Karol isn’t someone you love to hate from the beginning, either, and that makes her story even more heartwarming a the conclusion.

Sometimes when it comes to Christmas or holiday season gift ideas, you can’t go wrong with books. Right now there’s a family of wonderful authors out there ready to be part of your family’s celebrations as well.
