I love to watch scary movies during the holiday season when everything in the house is cozy and the nights are long.
Since many of the brand new movies have been disappointing (avoid It’s a Wonderful Knife), I like to find roundabout ways to get me in the creepy Christmas spirit.
Here are three spooky, snowy movie night suggestions if you need a break from the sparkle:
Krampus
This 2015 offering was better than I expected, as it shows what happens when you lose your Christmas spirit. Based on the legend of Krampus, of course, the well-done character design is from Weta Workshop (the folks behind Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings creatures), and its PG-13 rating brings to mind the fun spooky 80s films like Poltergeist and Gremlins.
Rare Exports (A Christmas Tale)
A Finnish film from 2010 is one of those weird movies you best need to go in mostly cold (no snow pun intended). There’s some twists on a Christmas mainstay set in the icy, Finnish region of Lapland. The main protagonists are reindeer hunters, so I’ll give you that hint. There’s a cool mix of humor and horror, but make sure you find a copy with subtitles. Most of the film is in Finnish.
Dead Snow
This is another comedy horror foreign film. The 2009 film was made in Norway, just one year prior to Rare Exports, but is different type of lore. There’s a bloody (very bloody) story of the classic “spam in a cabin” hedonistic young folks, but with the presence of Nazi zombies. This is actually set during Easter, not Christmas, but it’s still just a icy cold. There is a 2014 sequel, if you’re game: Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead.
Whether the weather outside is frightful or pleasant, you can still be both slayin’ and sleighin’ with some horror fun during the holidays.
