Just watched this latest trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, again and I’m still loving it. Granted, I’m a fan of George Miller and the Mad Max franchise. I just wanted to go on record and say, this looks fantastic. This flick has every chance at success, and I hope it does huge box office. It will confuse a lot of studio executives but that’s fine. Let me explain: Brains. Smarts. This flick and its Heroine, Furiosa don’t seem to be dumb, and Miller doesn’t seem to be treating his audience as stupid. Yes, Furiosa is the star, but at least from this trailer, she doesn’t look like she’s doing anything an actual brave human being would be capable of doing. It reminds me if Ripley in Alien. Sigourney Weaver’s character did the things we would all do, if we were that brave. This is where studio heads will be confused. They want to write off this movie as being about cars and chases. To an extent it is. More so, it’s about the people who drive the cars and why they are chasing. That’s really it.
The audience has zero problems with women leads in films. Even action movies like Mad Max. The problem rears its ugly head when we are told to believe a 5-foot woman can throw a punch and knockout a 6-foot monster of a dude. That’s a step to far. Also? Girls who pick up a light saber and successfully fight a Sith Lord to a standstill on their first day to ever hold the afore mentioned light saber. It’s fucking stupid. No one has a problem with women. Audiences have a problem with stupid.
But I digress. Furiosa looks like it’s full of great action and smarts. The trailer is fantastic. Someone needs to show this to the Disney Execs. ASAP. Furiosa hits theaters May 24th.
