Remembering the music of Kurt Cobain 30 years later.

It’s been 30 since Kurt Cobain was taken from us. Some say we lost him and that’s fine. It is a loss. The music is the loss. Kurt Cobain being a father to his kid is a loss. We could spend days and days talking about ‘what if’ this and ‘what if’ that. Honestly, I have zero interest in any of that. Selfishly, I want more music. I would love to hear how Cobain would have developed and what turns his tastes would have taken. It’s a selfish notion for sure. But come on. What would that guy be doing today? What music would Kurt Cobain be listening to? Or hopefully making? Sadly, that’s like an argument about would win in a fight between Batman and Superman. Batman, but it would take a long time to have the argument.

All I know is this: Kurt Cobain and Nirvana saved music. They saved the idea of a group of dudes who loved music could just make some and it would be great. In a time of Hair Bands and corporate music, NIrvana was beyond a breath of fresh air. They were air. For people who felt smothered by complete bullshit, fraudulent garbage music. Nirvana was honest. It was raw and sad and beautiful. And it fucking sounded great! Let’s not overlook the sonic wall of pure uncut sonic goodness that Nirvana brought. And the cherry on top? After so many dismissed Kurt Cobain and Nirvana as just, some revved up distortion fueled garage band, they went on to do an acoustic show on cable TV that still stands as one of the best live shows ever. Ever. MTV’s Unplugged with Nirvana is the stuff of legend. It’s that good.

So, Kurt Cobain is gone but not forgotten. Here’s 3 songs that Nirvana recorded that still get me to stop what I’m doing and listen. We miss ya Kurt Cobain. Thanks for the music.

Have to start with this one. This is the song that started it for me. The guitar chugging. Then that iconic drum intro. This is what stopped me in my tracks. Literally. It played on the radio, and the first time I heard it, I was glued. The effect was instantaneous.
