We just woke up to the news that Sony has reversed course on its new policy regarding Helldivers 2. This is massive win for the Helldivers players, gamers everywhere and anyone who wants to have a say in their community. Here’s the short version of the lesson: Boycotts work. When people get vocal about their displeasure, things change.
A few days ago, Sony announced a new policy regarding the super popular game, Helldivers 2. The new policy mandated that Helldivers 2 players had to make an account with Sony PlayStation. Gamers had no choice in the matter. They could take it or leave it. They decided to leave it. For a variety of reasons. The threat of censorship. Getting kicked off the platform and not being able to play a game they love because they were forced to agree to terms of service they never wanted in the first place. And the whole bait and switch of it all. People have been playing Helldivers on Steam for weeks! Now those players were supposed to make a PlayStation account? And maybe get kicked off? Nope. Nope, no and nope. Let the boycott begin.
It was a Tsunami of unhappy Helldiver 2 players. Comments, Cancelations, all of it. And it worked. Sony reversed course. There’s the lesson for all of us. Letting your voice be heard is good. Boycotts and the threat of boycotts work. This is great news. Good for us. Good for gamers. And yes, good for Sony for listening.
Here’s a video that explains the Sony and Helldivers 2 situation.
