I have good news and bad news about James Gunn’s Superman trailer. It’s actually going to be a heads up for Warner Bros and the DCU as well. Let’s just rip the band aid off and begin. I just watched the trailer for James Gunn’s Superman movie and it’s really a mixed bag. Just being honest. As a DC Comics fan, I want this movie to work.

Here’s the good news. It looks like they got the character of Superman ‘right’. And to have the Superman trailer open with Superman in a bloodied heap at the open? Great call. If Superman can’t get beat up? Your movie is going to suck. So, maybe someone has Kryptonite or maybe James Gunn went super old school with his take on Superman. Either way, it’s good for storytelling. There has to be the chance that a bad guy could win. (Fun fact: The original Superman couldn’t fly. He could only jump really high. The flying was added for the animators of the original cartoon to make the animators lives easier) So that’s the good part.

Here’s the bad news about the Superman trailer. Again, this is just my opinion as a writer and fan. They have way too much happening. Like, WAY too much. This felt like a kitchen sink production. Is it a Superman movie or a reboot of the entire DCU? Slow down! Everyone and their mother, is in this thing. Krypto, Hawkgirl, Lex Luthor, Giant monsters, Mr. Terrific, Robots, and all kinds of other shit. Slow… down… You don’t have to reboot every DC character in one fell swoop. Just give is a good Superman movie.

Lastly, I didn’t dig the music. The them is classic, but the electric guitar version is lame. They are probably trying to make everything in the DCU more contemporary and modern. That’s a tough sell when it comes to the Superman theme. That was kinda cringy. Just man up and give us the old school superman theme. Slip in the guitar stuff in the movie.
