How do they hire at the FAA? Is this right?

This is one of those unpleasant posts where I wouldn’t even consider it if I thought it wasn’t helpful. There was just a horrible crash. All we are looking to do is prevent more crashes in the future. That’s how things are supposed to work. And usually that’s how it goes. That is the spirit in which this post is intended. Let’s talk about air traffic controllers and the FAA. What in the world is going on? Are they overworked? Understaffed? We all know the job is extremely important to say the least and you have to think it’s a teeny bit stressful. So, what is happening?

Are we getting enough people to handle the demand? And are those people highly qualified? That’s what we all want, right? People hired for merit. So, how are they hiring at the FAA?

And just like any other lifesaving occupation, I don’t think we want hiring quotas. We want the best people for the gig, right?
