Hits and misses from last night’s Fire Aid show.

God bless em. These performers all have their hearts in the right places. Last night, a who’s who of the music world took the stage in LA to raise money for the victims of the LA fires. It’s a noble endeavor. I have nothing but love for anyone who stepped up to help. Sadly, they didn’t feel compelled to show this kind of love for N.C. Yeah. We noticed.

For this post, I’ll refrain from criticizing the powers that be in LA. I’ll just let that go. for now.

Let’s talk instead about the music. Shows like Fire Aid are always good for a couple reasons. They raise money for a good cause, and you get some wild pairings on stage. People are in rush to pick songs and musicians, and you get some wonderful stuff that you wouldn’t normally see! So, let’s get into some of the sets that stood out.

It’s going to be hard to top Pink and her Zep cover. That was out of this world. Just saying.

Then she got political and kinda ruined it. But that was a hell of a good cover.

See?! Weird shit. It’s great!

Good for No Doubt. Nice to see ya! It’s a wee teeny reminder some new music from you all would be welcome!

Now for a big ‘miss’. They should give the Nirvana reunion thing a rest. I know it’s a great idea on paper… but it just doesn’t work. Not blaming anyone. You’re all fantastic. It just doesn’t work. Joan Jett, St. Vincent. Dave’s kid… It’s all a kind of a miss for me.

Mayer came close to greatness with this Petty cover of Free Falling. Dude. Next time let the audience sing the chorus. Trust me on this one. They really, really, really wanna sing along.
