Here’s a bit of news for all of us James Bond fans: Amazon MGM just got control of 007. I’ve taken some time to ponder the implications of this and I’m pretty much in agreement with Nerdrotic. However, in my opinion Jame Bond ended as a franchise with the last movie. Let me explain why 007 was over way before Amazon MGM stepped in.
The producers of Bond movies killed the franchise when they killed James Bond in “No Time To Die”. That was it. The end. Killing your lead character is franchise death. I say this as a writer: Once the audience knows a character is dead? It’s over. After we all watched Han Solo’s BS death in that Disney Star Wars movie, no one cared about Solo as a film. Why? We know how it ends and it’s a bummer.
James Bond, like Star Wars or the MCU (who truly screwed up when they killed Tony Stark) are all fairy tales. The good guys never die. That way the stories go on forever in our minds. Notice how you never see a lead character die in Lord of the Rings. And don’t say Boromir. He’s a secondary character who’s death moved the story forward and raised the stakes of the power of the rings. And he was replaced by Faramir, who was arguably a better version of the same guy.
It’s a bummer that the same people who don’t understand Tolkien or what makes stories work got ahold of James Bond. Amazon will make a 007 movie. It’ll suck. The odds of it not sucking are astronomical. They might as well hire the actress from Rings of Power and let her have a go at it. Let her write the thing too! That would probably be an improvement.
So long, 007. It was a good ride.
