Remembering Val Kilmer. An actor first and reluctant movie star, last. He will be missed.

Sad news about the passing of Val Kilmer. The actor died of pneumonia at the age of 65. He leaves behind an incredible body of work. Just an astounding number of great films. We’ll highlight a few favorites too. How can you not? Here’s the impressive thing about Kilmer. He could have just gone the movie star route. A guy with his looks? It’s like someone drew up the prototype for a movie star and presented Val Kilmer. But he had different ideas. Val Kilmer chose to be an actor. He worked hard on his craft too. It paid off in a wonderful career.

Once you start looking at the vastly different body of work it’s hard not to be impressed. Dude had range! He could have just gone and played leading man after leading man, but the guy wanted to do something more interesting. He wanted to act. Good for him. He did it too. Good for Val Kilmer. What an incredible career.

I highly recommend the documentary Val. That’s a quality look at what made Val Kilmer click. It’s a good film.

Now let’s get to some favorite roles. That’s the fun stuff. Kilmer’s Jim Morrison is the stuff of legend. Just amazing.

This is just a few. Kilmer was coerced into taking the role of Iceman in Top Gun. That’s a story he tells in the documentary, Val. You’ll want to see that for yourself. Good stuff.

RIP Val Kilmer. Willow was good. Batman wasn’t your fault. Real Genuis is a classic and Top Secret is misunderstood brilliance. You will be missed.
