“Milk. It does a body good.” A slogan for the ages. With catch phrases like this, kids in America sure had some greatness to aspire to growing up in the 80s and 90s.
It does a body good? Boy, I’ll say.
It’s the whole idea of going from “geek-to-chic.” And in the 80s and 90s, that premise was very popular in tv, movies, and even real life. For anyone who watched day time talk shows back then, this was probably one of the most popular topics to air on a weekly basis.
Beginning in 1984, America’s Dairy Farmers produced a handful of commercials advocating for the consumption of milk. Cow’s milk. From America’s dairy farms.
And until about the 2000s, cow’s milk was the only good answer to the intense craving of a nice cold glass of milk. Usually hitting after consumption of a fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie. Nowadays, we have so many milk alternatives to choose from. But then, there was just something about getting milk sourced from the local dairy farm. And even delivered to your house if you so inclined.
“Pardon me, guys.” His voice drops like 16 octaves!
Every kid wants to grow up to be big and strong, confident and popular. Well, these milk ads showed us the light. If we just drank milk, we’d grow up to be all of those things, and maybe more.
Now, I don’t know who this Michael Martin guy thinks he is, but she sure showed him. Really though, what girl didn’t want to provide that kind of sass to a snobby dude like this?
Milk was as available to us like a Starbucks on every street corner. And it wasn’t as expensive as we see it today. A small carton at school lunch in the 90s was $0.25. I remember when the price went up to $0.30 and what a pain in the ass it was to have to bring an extra coin to lunch every day! It’s like the whole “cost increase to make a call from a pay phone” debacle all over again.
Watching all these ads again has certainly given me a chuckle. And no doubt, seeing them as an adult is different then watching them as a kid. But I’m thankful to have been a part of the target audience back then. We were in simpler times.
So let’s end this week by raising a nice cold glass of milk and saying, “Cheers.” Who knows, it just might do our bodies good.
I grew up with those commercials, and was into milk even before them, and I still am. I didn’t need those ads to tell me what was good! I grew up working summers on my grandfather’s farm, and milk was a big part of breakfast and supper. Breakfast was meat, eggs, and oatmeal, and grandpa had his oats with milk as well. He lived to 104. There is nothing so good as milk after an afternoon’s hard work, a hike, the dirt bike, or any other time some serious refreshment is wanted. I’ll have mine chilled to 34 degrees, in a Texas-sized iced-tea glass. Milk is a drink you can slam or savor!
Dang! Milk from a dairy farm? That’s legit goodness. That stuff is fantastic.
That sounds incredible!! Even though the farm life is incredibly hard work, there’s something so serene about it too. And I can’t imagine all that wonderful food. Sounds glorious!
Also, nothing like chugging a cold glass of chocolate milk after running a marathon either. Those brown cows sure know how to produce the good stuff. Haha, yes. I believed that for a while as a kid too. 😂
Ha! We can only hope that one day, science can create a cow that delivers choco milk. Fingers crossed! LOL
