It’s being reported that Brian Wilson has died at the age of 82. The X account for Brian Wilson posted this earlier. No cause of death is mentioned. Just a request to respect the privacy of the family. It’s a heartbreaking loss. Truly a sad, sad day for music. Brian Wilson will be missed. His influence on popular music can’t be overstated. He was the real deal. And a kind soul. We’ll post some additional thoughts and music below.
Let’s not get bogged down in a music theory lesson when it comes to the life of Brian Wilson. Let’s just say that there was music before Wilson and then there was music after. But it was different because of his input. Even the Beatles were influenced by Brian Wilson.
Good Vibrations might seem quaint now, but once upon a time it was like landing on another planet and discovering life. It was uncharted musical territory. To call Good Vibrations unique is the understatement of the last 2 centuries of music.
So long, Brian Wilson. Thank you, for everything. You will be missed.
PS. This clip is just wonderful. What a kind and generous soul.
Nearing sixty now, I have heard these popular Beach Boys songs my entire life.
Can’t say I was ever a big fan until one day I watched a special on PBS, believe it was called “SoundBreaking”.
This special, one in a series I believe, featured The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Pink Floyd.
Musicians creating different sounds and sounds we had never heard before.
Not being a musician, I had never really thought of it in this way, the experimentation with sound and how their process developed.
Listen to The Beach Boys “Good Vibrations”.
Layers and layers and layers of sound.
I hope folks understand just how good this song is and appreciate the genius that was Brian Wilson.
With that being said, it is time for Mike Love to retire the present day band.
Yes! I agree. It’s hard to appreciate Pet Sounds and songs like Good Vibrations without knowing the context. I don’t think people can fully appreciate the monumental shift in pop music after Pet Sounds. Completely unheard of! New territory. So good. Just incredible stuff.
Roger that.
Just throwing it out there, but if you ever need a pinch hitter for “Sunday Jams”, I’m ready to make my bones here.
Best..
