Well, a lot of people seem to have a bee in their bonnet over this scene from the new Superman movie and I’m here to tell you why I think they’re wrong. And don’t worry, I’ll explain. First, here’s the clip from James Gunn’s Superman where Lex Luther is confronted by the man of steel.
So, we all watched? We’re all on the same page? Now we’ll get to some criticism…
Ready? I say all of this as writer. Superman is WAY overpowered in almost every adaptation. It’s insane. Some moron once had Superman taking a bullet to the eye and not blinking. It becomes stupid. In a world where Superman is that powerful, the guy is never in any real jeopardy.
I thought this scene was strong! Superman confronting Lex Luthor over his kidnapped dog?! Let’s go! Superman is barely able to control his rage. It’s awesome. And yes, I imagine Superman did hear what Lex said. He just can’t believe it. It’s more of a ‘Say that again” as opposed to “I didn’t hear you”.
When you write a superman character it’s crazy difficult to make them vulnerable. Superman losing his shit over his dog? Great call by James Gunn. Outstanding. It gives me hope for the movie. Now I’ve seen clips of Superman using heat vision in this flick. Meh. Not a fan. You start asking why he doesn’t do that in every situation once you establish it. I’ve never been a fan of cold breath and heat vision. Blah.
As for Superman getting into a fit of barely controlled rage over Lex Luthor kidnapping his dog? Hell yes. Superman opens on July 11th.
