Let’s watch the trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Or as I like to call it, Avatar 3. Just watch the trailer and then scroll down for my thoughts. We’ll have a little Avatar discussion.
Okay, let’s begin. Avatar 3: Fire and Ash. The movie hits theaters on Dec 19th. Here’s my big problem with this whole franchise: The story. The script. I could forgive the first Avatar flick being a predictable rehash of a much of other movies. Avatar was Dances with Wolves in space. And Dances with Wolves was a super familiar story. Avatar was breaking new ground visually. It was amazing.
It’s incredible how fast we all get used to the visuals now. Avatar 2 was visually interesting but nowhere near as stunning as the first movie. Which meant the huge problems with the story really stood out. Avatar 2 was bad. Let’s just call it like it is. Bad storytelling.
Now it looks like James Cameron is doing it again with Avatar 3. It looks like more of the same with a slightly different setting. Huh. That’s not going to cut it. I want Avatar to succeed. I would love another franchise to rise out if the Star Wars, Marvel ashes. Avatar is going to do something different than this to build that franchise. Do something new. You can’t just put new stripes on a dragon and call it new. We’ve seen all this before. What we haven’t seen is a good story. That’s all.
