Riding high with Mr. Sketch scented markers. Those were the days.

Mr. Sketch Scented Markers. I have seen posts about these come across my nostalgia feed every so often over the years. With the same old joke about kids literally sitting in class sniffing markers, probably getting high without even knowing it.

Today this all strikes me a bit different and gives me a pretty hearty chuckle. So maybe it’s about time we discuss the grade school classic: Mr. Sketch scented markers.

There was something about the joy and excitement of coloring with these markers. When the teacher brought them out of her filing cabinet during art class. She would place the pack of 12 on the center of our desks (typically grouped in fours). The fastest kid would grab the box and slide out the Styrofoam container while we’d all gasp in awe of the rainbow assortment. Even though we already knew what these markers smelled like from previous use, it was always an element of surprise to find out which was our favorite scent. One by one we’d pass a marker around the group, sticking the tip of the marker right up our nostrils to get the best whiff.

The scents all-in-all, were decent. You had the standard fruity scents like blueberry, apple, and lemon. The more exotic of the fruits like mango and melon (I remember these being my favorites). Then you had scents that were completely obscure and frankly, smelled just awful. Black licorice, cinnamon, and mint to name a few.

When it came to actually using these markers, they certainly got the job done. I can still hear the marker-tip squeak as it would glide along the paper. The colors started off so saturated they would actually bleed through the paper. And it was always devastating once a marker began to dry out. The color wasn’t nearly as bold as when it was fresh. But that wouldn’t stop us. Just press harder! Which of course resulted in… louder squeaking.

Feel a bit nostalgic about these fun yet non-toxic scented markers whenever you come across these posts? Well, you can give them a try because they are still in production! Although, most likely a lot safer than they were when they came out 60 years ago. You can find them on Amazon, or any large retail or office supply store. And now with “22 juicy scents!”

What a fun article! I loved these markers. It was fun smelling all of the different scents when you took the cap off to use them. Once in a while you got the side eye from a teacher like we were addicts sniffing airplane glue. LOL!
Those black licorice, mint and cinnamon ones were horrible. It’s amazing to see all of the new scents they have now. Our school was cheap. We only had the standard ones.
Thank you Serena for this piece of nostalgia. It was fun!

Thanks Lynne! It’s funny you mention “sniffing glue” because I’ve seen comments about folks remembering the paste in a jar… And the need to taste it! 😂
