Well, I just watched the teaser trailer for HBO’s Lanterns. It’s the Green Lantern show set in the DCU just in case you were wondering. Okay, so let’s talk about this teaser trailer that felt like a regular trailer. Right out of the gate? This show is looking like a real mixed bag. Good stuff and bad. The cast is right on. I have zero issues there. Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan? That’s just a no-brainer. The problems for me started once we got passed the cast.
Reminder: Green Lanterns are pretty much galactic cops. Law enforcement. Each area of the galaxy gets one Green Lantern. So, in effect, Lanterns is a cop show with 2 detectives fighting over one gun (the green lantern ring). That’s my takeaway from this trailer. The old trope of ‘I’m getting too old for this shit” so I’m training a new guy. Okay. Fine. We’ll see where that goes, I guess.
My other big issue with HBO’s Lanterns (or True Detectives in space… or No country for old lanterns) is that it looks cheap. The sets. All the shots outside. They look cheap. The opening scene in the car? Why not shoot that at night? It’ll look soooo much cooler! You shoot that during the day because you’re worried about money. That’s my guess.
We’ll hold off on more criticisms because, frankly I don’t want this show to suck. There’s a good show in here with Lanterns and I’m hoping DC, WBU, and HBO can find it. Along with their checkbooks to make this look better.
