“Man on the Run” the new Paul McCartney doc comes up short.

Last night I decided to jump into the new documentary on Paul McCartney, Man on the Run. It’s streaming on Amazon Prime. I consider myself a fan of McCartney and the Beatles and all that good stuff. If there’s a chance to check out something new? Sign me up.

So, got about halfway through and I’ve got some thoughts. I’ll share those below. I thought it might be a good idea to share the trailer before I chimed in with my 2 cents.

I’ll just say a few things and try to make it brief. First? Amazon Prime needs to stop with the commercials. Paying for a service and still being subjected to all those ads before you watch the movie you already paid for is a douche move. Oh well. Back to the review.

Like most documentaries, Man on the Run delivers a message. But not the one they thought they were conveying. This film is a love letter to Paul and Linda McCartney. That’s fine. I dig it. But boy of boy does it all look so easy for Paul. In the trailer, his voice over talks about thinking he could never write again after the Beatles. Interesting! Until 2 seconds later when Paul is writing songs and carefree on his farm. Huh.

Every challenge McCartney is faced with is overcome in mere moments. It’s almost comical. He puts a band together. No problem. Some of those guys quit after a few YEARS. Years! And guess what? Not a problem for Paul. Not an issue really. He just moves on and doesn’t blink. It’s just on the next bit.

Maybe there’s bigger challenges ahead for McCartney. So far, Man on the Run is a tale of mildly irritated man. Is the footage cool to see? Sure. But wow. It’s all so very cavalier it kind of bums me out. Not sure I needed to know this stuff. John Lennon is going to get murdered in the second half and Paul McCartney is going to lose Linda. I’m guessing the filmmakers will cover that. I’m a little worried about how they deal with that. Yikes.
