Uh oh. Trouble brewing in the world of entertainment. More specifically, in the world of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. There might be some questionable casting as well, but that’s for another day.
Like most movies, the big concern is the source material. How honest are you being and how much are you honoring the source material? Look at the difference between The Lord of the Rings movies and Amazon’s rings of power. One is awesome and the other is shit. So, when it comes to the movie adaptation of The Odyssey, which translation did Nolan go with? This is where the trouble may be brewing. Nolan went with Emily Wilson’s translation and she’s not without some controversy.
As I said at the open: Uh, oh. Emily Wilson’s 2017 translation of The Odyssey sparked debate by using a feminist, modern lens to strip away centuries of accumulated patriarchal bias in Homeric interpretation. While acclaimed for accessibility and meter, critics debated her rendering of key terms, her interpretation of Odysseus’s character, and her direct tackling of misogyny in the text.
This could spell trouble. Nolan isn’t perfect and this whole Odyssey could turn into a shit show, super fast.
