It’s has begun. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie from Disney Star Wars is getting its first reviews. So, what’s the verdict? Does it blow or did breathe new life into the franchise? Okay, I might have gone a bit far with the whole ‘Breathe new life’ part. We all know that isn’t going to be the case with this flick.
So, what are people saying? Well, it feels like people are trying to be kind and saying stuff like “fun” and a “kids movie” and episodes of the show stitched together to form a movie. It’s that kind of thing overall.
Am I going to see The Mandalorian and Grogu? Nah. Not in the theater. I’m sticking by my original take that this movie is cash grab and just a release from Disney to keep Star Wars in the public eye. It’s a placeholder that they are hoping with move some merch and make a couple bucks. This flick has a budget of around $144 million after tax credits, that’s cheap for a Disney Star Wars movie. Now we just wait and see how the box office is. That will be very telling.
It’s bit of a catch-22 now. If Disney Star Wars makes money off of The Mandalorian and Grogu, will they just keep doing movies like it on the cheap? And if it tanks at the box office, do they mothball the whole franchise for a few years and effectively kill any new stuff? Yikes. This is probably why reviewers aren’t giving The Mandalorian and Grogu super harsh reviews. Everyone knows the stakes and are at least playing nice… for now.
Here’s another review of the reviews and The Mandalorian and Grogu. It’s all about the “Lukewarm and mixed reviews”.
I’m hoping it’s good. We re-watched the 3 seasons to get reaquainted with some of the background.
