Love it or hate it, a ton of entertainment news gets dropped each year at San Diego Comic-Con from movie trailers to gaming news to new comics and television series, toys and more.
There have already been some trailer drops we’ve covered including two I am personally looking forward to: Coyote vs. ACME and Resident Evil, but these cons tend to flood visitors with more content than they can consume. And frankly, a lot of it is same-old, same-old.
So, if you aren’t into the crowds or another Marvel sequel, here are three interesting things kind of under-the-radar things that were announced at Comic-Con:
Princess Donut Keeps Her Voice
Probably the best casting news from the entire event is that Jeff Hays will be the voice of Princess Donut, or rather Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk in the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series. Author Matt Dinneman has worked for years to create a hilarious, page turning series of novels about a dude forced into participating in an intergalactic dungeon crawl reality show after aliens destroyed most of the earth…in his boxer shorts…and with his ex-girlfriend’s cat in tow. That cat is the story-stealer, Princess Donut. Now that the story is finally getting the popularity it deserves, there will be television series coming to Peacock.
And instead of “A-List actress #650” voicing this beloved character, Hays, the man who narrates all of the audiobook versions of the series, will continue to bring the voice of Princess Donut to life. Good. Here’s a peek from the event showing Hays’ amazing voice range in just a few seconds:
Read the books now or listen to the audios…and let’s hope they continue to stay true to Dinneman’s crazy, crude and wild storytelling.
Johnny Depp’s Scrooge portrayal
I know. I know. We do NOT need another interpretation of A Christmas Carol. Yet, dang it, it’s Johnny Depp. I wanna see Depp do this deranged horror version of the story. Depp showed up at Comic-Con in costume and character to surprise guests with his eerie performance as Ebenezer. And maybe, as it is a ghost story, it could work. Maybe it will tank or maybe Depp could be up there with George C. Scott and Michael Caine in cool Scrooge portrayals. Who knows?
A New Gundam Series!
Finally, I have to get some anime news in. Mobile Suit Gundam is one of those manga and anime — and toy — franchises that has managed to remain cool for decades. There is another new reimagining coming in 2027 with Gundam RG XARX-ZERO. The animation looks beautiful and director Kenji Kamiyama, has a long list of achievements, most notably multiple Ghost in the Shell series and Blace Runner: Black Lotus. When you’re tired of Marvel and DC ruining themselves, don’t forget to head to the anime news…because there’s always a badass Jaeger out there somewhere.
A good portion of what comes from any major entertainment event is probably forgettable to most people except super fans, but you have to admit there’s plenty of content. Maybe there’s something cool to look forward to in the future with these three announcement…but I’ll let you good readers be the judge of that.
