Maybe we should have some kind of font that indicates sarcasm. The part of the headline that reads “That sure happened fast” was meant to be sarcastic and mocking. I find it simply wild how fast people can ‘spontaneously’ get together to riot after ICE does anything.
It feels as if moments after ICE agents shot and wounded a Venezuelan guy in Austin TX, people were taking to the streets. That’s all I know about the story. ICE agent’s wounded a Venezuelan dude after a brief car chase, and you blink your eyes and there are people in the streets.
So, there’s an interesting piece of video. Then we smash cut to this:
It’s still daylight. That is a quick turnaround for people to get together!
And when you see all the foreign flags and all the protestors, you kinda think: Wow. ICE would have a field day out there. The police eventually made their way over. Just so you know.
Am I sorry that a Venezuelan got shot and hurt? Sure. Does ICE have a job to do? You bet. Are there millions of people who need to be encouraged to leave? Yup. And am I more concerned with violence and American citizens? You bet!
So, for all the protestors who suddenly appeared waving foreign flags: What’s your problem? That a guy got shot? Are you not cool with violence? If that’s the case, then we are in agreement. Violence isn’t cool. But if you’re just drumming up more violence to stop the people who are stopping the violence? We have issues with that.
The NYT is treating a shooting in Austin like someone just discovered life on Mars. Does it feel like NYT is trying to hype the fear and get people fired up to fight some bogey man? Of course it does. Maybe a few years ago it would have worked too. Now too many are hip to how thing in ‘media’ work. You can save your fake outrage. I’m not buying it. And if you are outraged? WHY? What part of the story is outrageous? The violence? If that’s the case let’s have that discussion.
