Okay, You ready? Here’s the trailer for the new Amazon series, Blade Runner 2099. It’s set to premier on Amazon Prime on November 25. That’s the nuts and bolts of it. Now for some more info for the rest of you sci fi fans who are gluttons for punishment.
Blade Runner 2099 is set after the event of the last movie, Blade Runner 2049. Huh. massive bonus points awarded for creativity when it comes to titles. Yes, that was sarcasm. Now for the mixed bag that would appear to be the source of the heartache with Blade Runner: This latest show, like the latest movie has a firm grasp on the vibe, the aesthetic, if you will. The art dept has come through with copying the vision of Ridley Scott. Now for my source of concern: Michelle Yeoh as the lead. That would inform me that they are doing a woman-centric Blade Runner. Fine. You want to give that a shot? Fine. We shall see. My expectations are extremely low now.
So, in summary: Blade Runner 2099 is coming. The look will be good. The lead is Michelle Yoeh. Yes, she has bills to pay too but is she the only Asian actress in Hollywood? Is there no one else? Sure, she won an award for that ‘Everything, everywhere all at once’ movie, but I wasn’t blown away with her performance in that. Just being honest. Was Ming-Na Wen already booked on a Disney show? Can we get some new faces up in here? But who knows? Maybe Michelle Yeoh as a robot is just what this series needed. Again sarcasm.
Before we watch the trailer, I want to make something clear. I’m not laying all of this at the feet of Michelle Yeoh. She’s just an actress. My bigger concern is this: You’re doing a big budget, stand-alone Blade Runner show. No Harrison Ford tie-in to the original. Good! And you’re going to make it female centric? Okay… now you’re in dangerous territory. You need an incredible story or an insanely compelling lead. Does Blade Runner 2099 have that? We shall see.
