Charlie Watts, the drummer for The Rolling Stones passed away at the age of 80. He died in a hospital surrounded by family. He had recently announced that he wouldn’t be on the latest Stones tour as he said he was recovering from a medical procedure. He will be missed. Dude was an absolute legend as a drummer and musician.

Without starting a “who’s the best drummer of all time” war, I’d like to just recognize the dude’s talent. Sure, he wasn’t Jon Bonham or Neil Peart. That wasn’t his style. He was a surgeon. A dependable craftsman who was the embodiment of less is more. Kept the rhythm like a metronome and added little surprises where they fit.
I dig the loud, brash styles of Keith Moon and drummers of that ilk, but Charlie was doing his own thing. Quiet, confident and still rocking like a champ. It’s a sad day for rock ‘n’ roll. Sad day for rhythm and blues. Sad day for music.
Check out Charlie on this track. Perfection.
