Seasons six of The Expanse has begun. And it’s looking really good! Every Friday, Amazon Prime will slow-trickle its best series through its last season.

Having no special access to the series, I can and will enthusiastically tell you about episode one.

We start with a cute scene of a little girl on an alien planet. She’s doing some sort of Snow White singing-to-the-animals bit. We pull back into space to see something…foreboding.

And then, after a tech-ed up version of a 1940s newsreel, which informs us about the last six months, it’s back to our familiar faces. The crew of the Rocinante is engaged along with Earth and Mars forces in stopping the Belters’ terrorist attacks on Earth.

It’s tense. The crew is clearly suffering from high tensions, low morale and short tempers. Low on supplies and systems in need of repairs illustrate how this war is taking its toll on all the main characters.

From UN Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala to Belter dissident faction led by Camina Drummer, everyone is feeling the awfulness of this war.

The painting of the bleak backdrop is completed as we, from multiple sources, learn that Earth is dying and it will even bring disaster to the Belter worlds as they are dependent upon Earth’s soil and resources to survive.

Inaros and Naomi’s son, Filip, seems to be personally cratering as the decadence afforded a dictator’s son and his conflicted conscience catch up with him.

Even more chilling is Marco Inaros’ indifference to this impending disaster or anything beyond his glorious megalomaniacal visions.

That should be enough to hook you as certainly as it did me. But there’s so many other loose ends! What’s going on with the protomolecule or the ancient dead race that created it? What lies beyond the Ring and how will that affect the warring factions?

There’s only six episodes in this season, which others have suggested will make the writers compress quite a bit of story into each episode. This is the final season, so it will be a rollercoaster I’m sure.
