Our media class is like those kids you knew in high school. When Izod was hot, they had nothing but that brand on their shirt. When Polo usurped them, the threw away the sad crocodile, donned the horse and put the collar up for good measure.
What I’m saying is, they are fashionable trend followers with an insatiable need to be the cool kids.
I remember when the movie, Man on the Moon came out in 1991. The most memorable thing about the movie wasn’t Jim Carrey’s total immersion into the role or the actors playing themselves in it.
No, it was all the pretentious Hollywood douches going out of their way to pronounce the director’s name. Milos Forman, which I assumed was pronounced “mile-oss” actually is “mile-OSH”. And we were treated to countless celebs over-emphasizing MileOSH in their effusive praise.
These reminiscences are brought flooding back as suddenly, Kiev, which has been pronounced and spelled this way for centuries is now “Kyiv” to the cool set.
Then it hit me. I’ve seen this all before.
